Pizza Toppings -The Three Top Choices in the US
One real problem with pizza is that you can stare at the menu, or your coupons, for eons not being able to make up your mind. Too many mouth watering choices. Too many people deciding. (Unless you live alone.) And if you are hungry it can be downright agony, having to make a choice between so many delicious varieties.
Yes, it does become more of an uphill battle the more people are involved with choosing between the many yummy toppings. Maybe it is best not to even mention the word pizza?
So, with all that choosing, did you ever wonder what others are choosing? You probably have a or a few favorites. How do they stack up with others favorites? You probably won’t be surprised to know the most popular, most sought after pizza topping of all times…
It’s the old standby, pepperoni. Something like 25% of all pizzas sold in the United States are pepperoni and cheese pizzas. Sausage is in second place, which again should be no surprise to most people. And you can probably guess number three, too. That’s right, it’s mushrooms. And about 70% of pizza places use canned mushrooms, not fresh ones. Most people ordering pizza seem to prefer the canned, although fresh mushrooms are gaining in popularity.
Next on the list are veggies. Onion is a real favorite coming in as number four on our list. That is slightly surprising. I sure do not know anyone who likes onions on their pizza. Then we have olives. Black olives are much more popular than their green cousins. Twice as many folks choose black olives than green ones. I didn’t even know you CAN add green olives to your pizza. I have never seen anyone add green olives, I don’t think our local very Italian restaurant even offers green olives…
After these major favorites, the rest are pretty much all tying for the fifth place. Here we have Ham, Peppers, Bacon, Hamburger and Tomatoes.
So there.
How is your family fitting in with the rest of the pizza lovers in the US? Are you the run of the mill pizza lovers, or are you a bit more exotic in your pizza choices?
If you are adventurous and would like to be a bit more worldly, you can try lamb and ginger on your pizza which is common in India. How about doing what the Japanese do and add some delicious squid on your pizza. Hm,, or maybe not. Squid and oregano? Well, I for one would pass on that one.
Let’s see, people in Taiwan like pizza too. Dining on pizza in Taiwan may put you face to face with a pizza loaded with peas shrimp onions and crab. Sounds better than the lamb pizza with ginger… and some scrumptious crab hiding under a layer of cheese and some basil sounds like a winner to me!
Then we have all the gourmet pizzas topped with goats cheese, artichoke hearts, smoked salmon, and lobster.
With all the exciting and exotic toppings for us to choose from, a simple old fashioned pepperoni pizza can never go wrong.

Here in the UK we sell a lot of Hawaiian ham and pineapple, Marguerita and pepperoni is also popular here.
In Malta you get boiled eggs on top of pizzas which is nicer than it looks.
